What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic form of healing and self-care practiced for over 3,500 years. Rooted in Daoist philosophies, TCM views a person’s mind, body, and spirit in constant relationship with each other and the environment. Therefore, treatments emphasize restoring balance and harmony between the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of an individual. TCM encompasses an array of healing modalities including: acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, qi gong, medicinal food therapy, and lifestyle counseling. This ancient healing practice supports your body’s natural healing abilities to restore balance and achieve sustainable and long-lasting health.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works on both a physiological and energetic level. Thin acupuncture needles are placed along energy pathways in the body to promote unobstructed, smooth flow of “qi,” or energy. When qi is flowing smoothly, the body is at an optimal functioning level. Acupuncture helps to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, regulate the nervous system, and restore homeostasis. While the intricacies of acupuncture cannot completely be broken down into biomedical explanations, modern research and imaging has been able to visually show some of the physiological changes to the body from acupuncture. Doppler ultrasounds (which measure the amount of blood flow through your arteries and veins) show that acupuncture increases blood flow and circulation, while MRI readings show how needling certain acupuncture points can affect specific areas of the brain. Thermal imaging before and after treatments also show noticeable reduced levels of inflammation in the body.
